It's become one of the most common accusations in modern Christianity. If you raise a concern about sin, "You're a Pharisee." Call out a false teacher, "You're a Pharisee." Question whether a celebrity Christian is truly in Christ, "You're a Pharisee." Defend biblical holiness, "You're a Pharisee." But is that actually what a Pharisee was? Today, the label has become a catch-all insult used to shut down biblical criticism rather than answer it. Today, we'll look at how rapper Lecrae invoked the term against Christians who objected to Lil Nas X's open blasphemy, as well as against a street preacher. We'll also examine how Pastor Alistair Begg used the charge in the controversy surrounding his advice that a grandparent should attend their grandchild's same-sex wedding. Are these truly examples of Pharisee behavior? Or has the word "Pharisee" become a convenient way to dismiss anyone who takes sin, doctrine, and holiness seriously?
